There is a color change between the head and running line to act as a visual indicator for proper loading of your rod for recast. Ultimately, the skill of the angler will determine where the "red stripe" will be in relation to the rod.
Beginners should start with the back of the "red stripe" 3-4 ft into the rod. As the skills of the angler progress the "red stripe" will move toward the rod tip. An advanced spey caster might leave the "red stripe" outside the tip a foot or more, allowing for a very tight loop.
