TROUT AND GRAYLING FISHING PAGE
Fishing area

In Pitlochry as in most of Scotland we are spoilt for choice with the amount of fishing available. It is mainly wild fishing but there is some stocked loch fishing available too. Below are some descriptions of fishing available.

Brown trout season 15th march - 6th October

cost / suggested requirements

River Tummel (Lower)

Running from the dam at Pitlochry to where it meets the tay four miles south, the river tummel can be fly fished for trout from the 15th of March through till the 6th of October, outwith these dates grayling can be targeted. Being a large fast moving river it holds some great specimen fish, they are not easy to catch however! There is plenty of room for back casts in certain areas, and some lovely glides and runs for dry fly fishing in the summer. Nymphing all year round can yeild some great results, as can the use of tummel style spiders.

Adults £10 a day / £25 per week,

Oap's £5 a day/£15 a week

Children £2.50 a day/ £7.50 a week

Available from Pitlochry tourist information, Ballinluig service station and Quayles of Pitlochry

season tickets available directly from the pitlochry angling club.

River Tummel (upper) east end of loch tummel to west end of loch faskally.

This short section of the river tummel is fly fishing only and has brown trout no grayling yet! It is great fun, but not easily accessed and there is limited room for back casting and not much in the way of pathways. This is reflected in the price. Being in a gorge it can be a good place to avoid the wind and a wonderfull spot of commando style dry fly fishing.

Adults: £2 a day /£5 a week / £10 a season.

Concessions £1 a day/ £2.50 a week/ £5 a season

Available from Pitlochry tourist information or Quayles of Pitlochry

Loch Faskally

Loch faskally offers boat or bank fishing by any legal method. Fly fishing on the upper section where the river garry flows into the loch is particularly enjoyable.

tickets available from the faskally boating station, north end of Pitlochry

River Garry (Blair Atholl northto Calvine)

Beautiful fly water just north of Pitlochry. Access is difficult but much easier than the upper tummel. Some good spots for overhead casting, but again a lot of good 'stalking' water with overhanging trees.

£4 a day

available from Blair Atholl Post Office.

Loch Kinardochy

Loch Kinardochy nestles on the hillside above Tummel Bridge 16km west of Pitlochry. This wild brown trout loch is a limestone loch so is rich with fly life and can create some amazing evenings sport in the summer. With it being crystal clear bright non windy days are tough. A drougue on windy days is advisable. Access is good due to its location next to a single track road, a short walk of 100 yards to the boats.

Boat and fly fishing only

£20 per boat per day.

Available at the Pitlochry tourist information centre.

Loch Bhac

Loch Bhac is a stocked loch that sits on the hillside above Queens View. This is by no means a commercial fishery and retains that 'wild feel' with some lovely natural brown trout to be had. There is only two boats on the loch and booking is recommended. If fishing by the bank waders help hugely. The stocked rainbows have a chance to naturalise and put up a great fight. Access is up forestry tracks that can become rutted in bad weather but is normally accessible with regular cars with care. There is a 200m walk to the boats, disabled access is available to badge holders but a decent 4x4 with good clearence is required.

Boat or Bank fly fishing only.

£30 per boat per day

£10 per person for bank fishing.

Available from the pitlochry tourist information centre.

Loch Garry

20 miles north of Pitlochry at dalnaspidal lodge. This big loch is daunting at first sight but has some wonderfull fishing. Its height depends on the hydro scheme. It has plenty of features to fish around from the bank and plent of room for overhead flyfishing. The wind can get quite brutal and come from any angle which just adds to the challenge. Access is up the north side of the loch on a track. A 4x4 or a car with decent clearence will get you right up the loch. Normal cars will have to stop quite early on as the track is quite rutted.

Main loch any legal method.

Aquaduct is fly only.

£4 per day per person

Available at the school house at the turn off for the loch.

Butterstone Loch fishings

Just ten miles down the road, this well looked after loch has something for everyone. Well stocked with hard fighting rainbows, it has a good head of natural browns and is set in fanatastic location above Dunkeld.
